You’ve gotta be good to play Sonisphere. Most Japanese idol groups begin (and end) their international career with performances at anime fairs, where fans of Japanese pop-culture are already on their side. It’s an easy win.
But Sonisphere is a proper metal festival, this year headlined by the likes of Metallica and Slayer.
British rock fans are not known to politely accept a band they hate. If the audience had thought BABYMETAL was a stupid gimmick, they would have eaten the girls alive and used their frilly red miniskirts as dental floss.
So the footage from the festival showing thousands of giddy metal fans rupturing into a circle pit and losing their minds is a high endorsement indeed.
