Belgian judoka Charline Van Snick, a bronze medal winner from the 2012 London Olympics, revealed on Monday that she returned a positive test for cocaine during the world championships in Rio last August where she also won bronze. "I received a letter informing me that a banned substance had been found in one of my urine samples, metabolites of cocaine," Van Snick told Belgian public radio station RTBF. "The news stunned me, because I am very careful with this, and I really have a perfect lifestyle. I have never taken any substance that can improve my performance. Not intentionally anyway," she said. The 23-year-old Belgian, who faces a two-year suspension and the loss of her medal in the lightweight category from Rio is now awaiting the results of the B sample. "With my lawyer, we are building a case to prove my innocence. I've always tried to be as professional as possible and meet all my doping obligations and I don't understand how such a thing could have happened," she added.
After the European Championships in Budapest in April , Van Snick her coach Damiano Martinuzzi finished their collaboration. "The tension between us was too big," he says."We were not on the same wavelength in terms of behavior and entourage. For everyone it was the best to do it like this. ' - Martinuzzi concludes. According to Martinuzzi there were particular problems with her discipline. "There were several reasons for the breakup. Charline took it fast and loose with life discipline. I realize that a professional athlete - as I was myself - occasionally needs decompression, but you're pro or you're not . The nightlife is dangerous, someone can put something in your drink. Now we speak here about traces of cocaine and that is very serious. " In an interview with about Van Snick recently, she spoke negatively about Martinuzzi." She is very impressionable ," he says. "She takes the wind. I agree, she is young ( 22 years old), but I had hoped that at least she would not talk about me like that after long and quality collaboration. She is very attracted what people thinks and that has changed her priorities. "
Olympic bronze medalist Charline van Snick denied at a press conference on Tuesday that she took cocaine, a substance for which she tested positive at August's Judo World Championships in Rio. The Belgian brought along a toxicologist to argue her point, claiming she had never taken the illegal Class-A drug voluntarily. "Charline is not a cocaine user. All the analysis suggested that she was exposed in an isolated and involuntary way to this product," said Jan Tytgat, a professor of toxicology and pharmacology at the University of Leuven. Van Snick, who could be banned for up to two years if found guilty of doping, added: "I don't understand what's happened to me, I've never taken cocaine. "I've always tested negative in my previous tournaments. I went to Brazil to win a medal so I knew I would be tested. "Everyone who knows me knows that I could never have done something like this." The 23-year-old, who also won bronze in Rio just as she had done in London last year, is waiting for the results from her B-sample. Tytgat explained that two hair samples showed she had not taken cocaine between June 2011 and August 2013 but that a trace of the drug showed up for the period August 10 to October 10, although that was 200 times smaller than for a regular cocaine user.
A evolucao do judo brasileiro no cenario internacional nao e novidade.
Estou fazendo tudo passo a passo", ressaltou Minakawa.
Kelmendi, a former Junior European and Junior World champion, was unbeatable in Brazil as she won all five of her contests to secure a monumental victory for Kosovo which earned worldwide headlines. Kosovo, which has a population of 1.7 million, previously earned a silver medal in boxing at the 1979 World Championships.
Fans and officials who were watching live on the IJF’s streaming platform (www.ippon.tv) were quick to express their delight on Twitter as Mr. Memli Krasniqi, Minister of Sports for Kosovo and the UK Embassy in Kosovo tweeted their well wishes after Driton Toni Kuka’s standout judoka topped the -52kg medal podium. Coach Driton Toni Kuka?said: “For Majlinda this is a great result, she had bad luck in the Olympics and this title she dedicated to the people of Kosovo. For me as her coach this is my dream, to win the first ever judo gold in a World Championships for Kosovo. I am happy also that Mr. Marius Vizer, IJF President, made it possible for our judoka to compete in official competitions such as the World Championships so he is a part of our success.” Kelmendi and her coach returned home to a hero’s welcome which will live long in the memory for both of them. “When we landed in Pristina Airport (the largest and capital city of Kosovo), everything was amazing. For the first time all national TV were there live for our arrival and then the Kosovo Government organised a celebration in the city which was fantastic. “The Minister of Sports, Mr. Memli Krasniqi, organised for all of us?to travel by a special bus with an official escort of our country to our city where we live and train in Peja which is 80 km from Pristina. There was twice as many people as a crowd of 20,000 were there to celebrate.
“The media during those days were calling us 24 hours a day for an interview with Majlinda and our other athlete Nora Gjakova who finished in seventh-place in the -57kg category. From this result everyone in Kosovo is talking about judo which is now the number one sport here. “Majlinda has said that she was born in Kosovo, she has trained in Kosovo and from our new and small country she has become world champion. I think in Kosovo that Mr. Marius Vizer, IJF President, means a lot to everybody with his support for our federation. Today we met Mr. Hashim Thaci, Prime Minister of Kosovo, and he invited him to visit us as soon as possible.”
Voce chegou a praticar outras modalidades antes?
Charles Chibana: Nao pratiquei outros esportes nao, desde crianca estou no judo.
Depois o Pinheiros me contratou e me deu uma grande estrutura. Nesse sentido, nao tive nenhum problema.
O Mundial no Rio tambem ajudou bastante a melhorar a visibilidade.
CC: Eu sinceramente nao sei. O nosso papel a gente esta fazendo. A selecao vem treinando e conquistando medalhas importantes.
Eu estava ganhando, mas o japones acabou me surpreendendo no finalzinho.
CC: A decisao me abalou bastante.
EE: Para voce, o esporte e essencial?
O judo me ajudou bastante, tanto na vida profissional, quanto pessoal.
EE: Como voce encara a questao do doping?
Everybody saw your photo with Automne Pavia with "bite" situation at the European Championships this year, fair play or what ? Also probably our readers don't know, but you also picked up nose injury against her . About the nose injury. It was in the individuals, not the team. There was no dirty move from her. She did a good clean attack. Unfortunately i lowered my head in the wrong moment and her hip hit my nose. About the bite. I guess, it was an accident that happened in the heat of the moment.
What is your relationship with Pavia after that match ? There Is no bad blood between us. We are not friends but we respect each other.
≪ L’audition a ete conduite de maniere tres conviviale, souligne Me Flagothier.

According to the website of the Belgian newspaper "Het Laatste Nieuws", Amelie Rosseneu, 5th at the European Championships in Budapest, silver in June in San Salvador and bronze medallist at the World Cup Rome, in October, she will fight under the colours of Israel from January 1, 2014, revealed today the judoka of 25 years old. Rosseneu is in a relationship for two years with the Israeli judoka Roni Schwartz, who is fighting in the-52 kg category. The two women decided to move and live in Israel. The change was possible after Rosseneu have consulted the two federations, Belgian and Israeli.
In July 2013, for the first time in history, an IJF Judo Grand Prix was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. By integrating the World Judo Tour, this event gave its credentials to a country which has already proven its capability in judo.
Regularly present on the international podiums, Mongolia does not need to demonstrate that it is a strong judo country. As is now regularly the case (China, Azerbaijan, USA), the IJF, in cooperation with the Mongolian Judo Federation (MJA), took advantage of the Grand Prix, to launch an educational programme.
Without any doubt, judo has now become a king of sports in Mongolia. If the traditional wrestling has and will continue to have a special place in the heart of the Mongols ? to be convinced just attend a traditional Naadam festival ? the Olympic title brilliantly obtained by Naidangiin Tuvshinbayar in the -100kg weight category in Beijing 2008 put judo in a special position.
“Judo is now widely recognized in our country,” said the President of the Federation and Minister of Agriculture and Industry, Mr. Khaltmaa Battulga, before adding: “It is important for us to maintain this status. For that we know that we need to develop a strong educational program which will be based on the youth.
The best way to try and explain the shambolic situation between Alice Schlesinger and the Israel Judo Association is to begin with the indisputable facts.
Schlesinger has rightfully earned a reputation as being one of Israel’s top Olympic athletes in recent years, winning medals at World and European championships and representing the country at the past two Olympic Games.
However, since London 2012, some 16 months ago, Schlesinger has taken part in just one competition.
Fast-forward to last week when a weeping Schlesinger announced that she will never represent Israel in judo again due to the ongoing, and seemingly ever-escalating, dispute with the Israel Judo Association.
So what happened? Well that depends on who you choose to believe.
Each side has seemingly got its own version of everything that has taken place since the end of the London Games and you could easily spend a day simply recounting the exchanges of accusations and insults between the parties over the past year.
There is, however, an unequivocal bottom line.
While the incessant bickering continues in the background, Alice Schlesinger’s judo career is going up in flames.
It all began a few days after the Olympics in a fateful meeting between Schlesinger and IJA chairman Moshe Ponti.
There are many versions of what actually happened in the room. Schlesinger claimed last week that Ponti told her that no matter what she achieves he will make sure she won’t take part in the Rio 2016 Olympics, something the IJA vehemently denied.
Schlesinger said that she was ordered to put on weight so that she can move up to the under-70 kilogram weight class in order to make way for Yarden Gerbi in the under-63kg event, an allegation the IJA described as a lie.
Each country is only allowed to send a single judoka in each weight class to the Olympics, unlike World and European championships when it can send two.
Following a disappointing showing by the five Israeli judokas in London, where Schlesinger reached the quarterfinals but won just one fight, the IJA decided to revolutionize the way its athletes train.
Rather than each judoka training mainly with his personal coach, the IJA adopted a team-orientated format in which the athletes spend far more time training together under a joint head coach and his staff.
That increased the tension between Schlesinger and the IJA to what has eventually become a hopelessly high level as the decision had consequences on life-long sporting ambitions, politics and love.
Schlesinger has been coached by Pavel Mosin since she was a teenager and the two also became romantically involved several years ago, announcing their engagement in 2008.
Therefore, it is of little surprise that the IJA’s decision to slash the salary of Mosin and demand that Schlesinger conduct most of her training with the new head coach of the women’s national team, Shany Hershko ? who coincidentally or not ? is also Gerbi’s personal coach, was received with such outrage by Alice and her partner.
There seemed to be a chance of a ceasefire earlier this year when Schlesinger joined the national squad for a short time, but that hope was dashed with yet another emotional explosion.
According to the IJA, Schlesinger and Mosin demanded that the association pay the coach’s travel expenses for April’s European Championships in Budapest, while the other five female judokas on the squad would have to make do only with the national team coach. The Schlesinger camp denied the claim, insisting financial funding was never an issue.
Mosin is also closely connected with the IJA’s previous board which was ousted in December 2010 by Tel Aviv District Court judge Eitan Orenstein after years of mismanagement and internal wrangling.
Ponti was ultimately voted as the new chairman in January 2012, but the bad blood between the squabbling sides of Israeli judo continues till this day.
Ponti argued that Schlesinger is simply a pawn in a political game that is being played over her head.
With both sides sticking to their guns and no mediator managing to defuse the situation, Schlesinger, who also sat out the World Championships in August in which Gerbi claimed a gold medal, appealed to the IJA in September to allow her to represent another country.
In a letter to Sport and Culture Minister Limor Livnat, she said that “the IJA has decided it no longer has any use in me and has already determined who is going to represent it in Rio 2016.”
With the IJA refusing to grant the 25- year-old her wish, claiming that it will only consider releasing her should another country request it (while Schlesinger insists that other countries are interested in her services but only if she first procures a release), she turned to the District Court last week demanding that it orders the IJA to set her free.
She called a press conference on the same day to declare that she will never again represent Israel in a judo competition.
“Ponti did everything he could to make me retire, but I won’t give up,” she said with her voice cracking up. “I’m fighting for my life and my dream and that is why I appealed to the court to force Ponti to release me so I can realize my dream and succeed where he thought I wouldn’t succeed.
“I fought to represent Israel,” she added with her eyes welling up. “That was the most important thing for me. But once I understood that it wasn’t going to happen I decided that I must move on with my life.”
Whoever’s to blame, the very unfortunate outcome appears to be that there is no way back for Schlesinger. An emotionally- charged dispute that got out of hand has ended up costing Israeli sport one of its most gifted Olympians. A loss local judo can scarcely afford.

Having tested positive for cocaine use following the 2013 World Judo Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Belgium’s Charline Van Snick has been given a two-year ban from competition by the International Judo Federation. Van Snick, who captured the bronze medal in the 48kg division at the 2012 London Olympics, protested the ban on her Facebook page (translated here by Inside the Games):
Two years ineligibility ? I’m offended by this decision. This penalty is too large and completely disproportionate! Hair analysis had yet indeed demonstrated the unique and tiny characters which suggest I was the victim of involuntary exposure. But I will fight until the end and go face to Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge this decision and try to minimize the suspension.
According to the report, Van Snick’s defense will be headed by Jan Tytgat, Professor of Toxicology and Pharmacology at the University of Leuven. Tytgat claims that not only did Van Snick not use cocaine between June 2011 and August 2013, but the amount of the drug that showed up in her positive test was 200 times smaller than would be expected for a regular cocaine user, therefore suggesting that Van Snick “was exposed in an isolated an involuntary way.”
One of Israel’s most promising athletes could represent Great Britain at the 2016 Rio Olympics after she announced she would no longer fight for Israel, claiming officials had tried to “destroy her career”. Judo star Alice Schlesinger, who won bronze at the World Championships, as well as reaching the quarter-finals at both the 2008 & 2012 Olympic Games, was almost in tears when announcing her decision, claiming that Moshe Ponte, the chairman of the Israeli Judo Association, said he wouldn’t allow her to represent Israel at the 2016 Games in Rio. The 25-year-old said: “A few days after London [Olympics], Ponte summoned me for a talk and I understood from him that all he wanted was for me to no longer be in judo. He said that even if I were ranked first in the world, I wouldn’t be in Rio, and he alone would decide who would be at the Olympics.
“I understood that he was trying to destroy my career. He said I had to switch to competing in the 70 kilogram category, when he understood that I wasn’t budging on the weight issue, he demanded I train under my rival’s trainer, for me that was a red line.
“I felt betrayed. I felt that all the time I’d devoted to the sport and all the things I gave up for judo had been erased. Ponte got up one morning and decided I wouldn’t be there. This was a knife in the back. I’d given all my life to realise my dreams in judo.”
Schlesinger also accused Ponte and his staff of smearing her in the media and claimed they labelled her trainer ? her boyfriend Pavel Musin ? of being a money-grabber. She said:?“They conducted a character assassination against me and lied to the press. Ponte won ? I will no longer represent Israel in judo.”
However, still wanting to continue to fight, she could now turn out for GB. “There are enough countries that would want me to represent them,” she said. “I fought to represent the State of Israel, and I wanted to remain here and fight for my place, for my flag and my anthem. When I understood that it wouldn’t happen here, I understood, despite the pain, that I need to move on. I wasn’t born yesterday, I’m an athlete with titles, and I’m convinced there will be many countries that will want me, instead of staying here and knowing I won’t be in Rio.”
Schlesinger has already paid visits to Azerbaijan and Turkey, while her mother is British, which could pave the way for her to represent GB.
The Israeli Judo Association says Schlesinger’s claims were “a heap of half-truths, errors, inaccuracies and even lies”. A statement read: “The false accusations against Ponte are unfounded, as will become clear later on. Her allegations against the management constitute ingratitude to those who rehabilitated the sport.”
Olympic judo bronze medalist Charline Van Snick says she will appeal her two-year suspension for a positive cocaine test before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The Winter Olympics in Sochi are just weeks away. See which American athletes to watch as we count down to the Games. Van Snick said the International Judo Federation left her no choice because she maintained her innocence and said hair tests showed the amounts found could not have impacted her performance in any way since they were "isolated and minimal."
Van Snick told RTBF network, "I want justice."
Van Snick was informed her of positive urine test around the time of the world championships in Rio de Janeiro in August, when she also won bronze in the 48-kilogram division.
Olympic bronze medallist Charline van Snick is to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over her two-year suspension for failing a drug test, she said on her Facebook page on Tuesday.
Van Snick tested positive for cocaine at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro last August, after another bronze medal, but has always vehemently denied taking the drug.
"I was shocked by the decision," she said. "The punishment was too harsh and disproportionate. An analysis of hair samples has shown the miniscule nature of the involuntary contamination I was exposed to. I intend to fight to the end."
At her initial denial, the Belgian insisted: "I don't understand what's happened to me, I've never taken cocaine.
"I've always tested negative in my previous tournaments. I went to Brazil to win a medal so I knew I would be tested."
In her defence, toxicologist Jan Tytgat explained that two hair samples showed she had not taken cocaine between June 2011 and August 2013 but that a trace of the drug showed up for the period August 10 to October 10, although it was 200 times smaller than for a regular
Belgian Judoka Rosseneu is to receive Israeli residency status so she can represent Israel alongside partner Roni Schwartz. Amelie Rosseneu (left) and Roni Schwartz. Photo: Israel Judo Association- Courtesy Sports have the ability to break down barriers, a well-known truth proven time and again in history, and once more in Israel on Tuesday.
The Israeli government coalition was in turmoil last month due to a bill aimed at granting male same-sex couples the same tax credits for raising children as heterosexual couples.
The issue generated a conflict between the Yesh Atid and Bayit Yehudi parties, with the latter initially vetoing the measure as it objected to language that gave legal recognition to homosexual couples.
The bill ultimately passed its preliminary reading in the Knesset last month, with the parties agreeing to iron out the details during the committee process.
The debate regarding the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) has divided many countries in recent decades.
After lagging behind, Israel has quickly closed the gap on the Western world in the past few years.
Same-sex sexual activity was only legalized under Israeli law in 1988, although the prohibition was not enforced after a 1963 court decision.
Israel has recognized unregistered cohabitation between same-sex couples, and although same-sex marriages are not performed in the country, Israel does acknowledge same-sex marriages conducted elsewhere.
Another milestone will soon be reached when judoka Amelie Rosseneu represents Israel in official competition. Rosseneu, who will celebrate her 26th birthday on Saturday, has represented her homeland of Belgium in the under- 48 kilogram weight-class over the past decade.
However, everything changed when she fell in love with Israeli judoka Roni Schwartz several years ago, with the two quickly becoming a couple. Rosseneu moved t o Israel to live with her partner several months ago and approached the Israel Judo Association with a request to represent the country.
Sport and Culture Minister Limor Livnat sent a letter to Minister of the Interior Gideon Sa’ar recommending that Rosseneu receive a temporary resident visa that would allow her to represent Israel. MK Yoel Razvozov and Olympic judo medalist Ya’al Arad also put their weight behind the request and the IJA confirmed on Tuesday that Rosseneu is due to become a temporary resident in the coming days.
Rosseneu, who is currently with the Israel women’s team in its training camp in Japan and South Korea, is a six-time Belgian national champion and claimed the gold medal at the European under-23 Championships in 2010.
She ended last April’s European Championships in Budapest in fifth place and will gift the Israel women’s roster another quality judoka, who is currently ranked at No. 15 in the world in her weight-class.
“She has been training with the national team on-and-off over the past year-and-a-half and her addition will give us a real push,” said national team coach Shany Hershko. “It is an honor for me and the team that an athlete from a judo powerhouse like Belgium wants to join us. She left everything behind to move here.”
The 29-year-old Schwartz only began her professional career seven years ago, initially in the under-48kg weight-class before moving up to the under-52kg. She missed out on a place at the London Olympics, but is currently ranked at No. 16 in the world and is hoping to reach Rio 2016.
This will be the first time that an athlete has earned the right to represent Israel due to a same-sex relationship, demonstrating once more that sports are at the forefront of social breakthroughs.
It is her love for Schwartz that brought Rosseneu to also fall for Israel and want to become an inseparable part of the country.
Regardless of how you might feel about LGBT rights, it will be hard not to cheer for Rosseneu, who followed her heart to Israel and will now have the chance to bring pride to her adopted country.
Many of our athletes have just finished the first OTC in Mittersill, where current European Champion, Kim Polling was also present. This week we had a closer look at what she has in mind for the next two years, on her way to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Road to Rio... this week we report from the Netherlands.
“I started judo when I was seven years old” - Kim begins. “I have ADHD and an article in a magazine wrote about the good effect that judo could have on children with ADHD. I started by the judo club Chi-Do in Roden. That’s a small town close to the town I lived. When I was about 14 years old I went to Judo Groningen. That was a bigger club in the nearest city. Three years later I went to Kenamju Haarlem where I became the best of the World under twenty years. At the end of 2012 I moved from Haarlem to Budokan Rotterdam and then I became the World Ranking Leader” recalls the former World Bronze medallist.
No doubt, 2013 was Polling's best year of her career, after winning 29 contest out of 31 in total. Kim reviewed her year and added ? "The beginning of 2013 was amazing, I won five tournaments in a row and became the number one in the World Ranking. Too bad I got injured in Casteldefels so my preparation for the World Championships was not perfect. But I became third in Rio and I was so happy with it. Even with an injury, I was capable of taking a prize at the World Championships, which is of course more precious than my European title. Not only because I was injured, but also because at a World championships the best judoka of the World compete. At a European Championships only the best of Europe, so that’s a big difference.
Winning most of her fights last year, she put the icing on the cake with the number 25, which is the amount of matches Kim won by ippon. What does winning by ippon mean to you?
I love to throw people by ippon and that is also a big motivation for me. If I can’t throw people anymore, I don’t think I like the game of judo so much as I enjoy it now. Also a big motivation for me is to see that I make progress. It’s not only gold that I’m happy with at the end of each tournaments. The three medals I am the most proud of are the gold one in Paris, the bronze one in Rio and the silver one in Tokyo. As you can see, two of these three tournaments I’m the most satisfied about, and I haven’t even won them. For example in Tokyo I won my quarter final against Tachimoto with a Waza-ari and Ippon. It was the first time that I defeated Tachimoto, so after I won, I was already satisfied. In the semi final I won against Kim (KOR), who was since then the only person who beat me in 2013. So even before the final started I already reached my goals for that day. Of course I wanted to win the gold medal in Tokyo, but it wasn’t my main goal of that day.” explains the most successful athlete of 2013.
It’s never been as easy as it seems for the European champion. Until May 2013 she had triple Olympic medallist, Edith Bosch stopping her from the Mega-Event. When we asked if she ever felt down or demotivated about it, she responded: “No, I never felt any fear of Edith Bosch. That’s because I became senior in 2011 and at that moment it was already clear that Bosch was going to the Olympics in 2012. For me 2011 and 2012 was only time to gain more experience in the senior judo. I knew that after the 2012 Olympics there was more space for me.”
Polling is determined to keep her position and stay on the top on the way to Rio. The qualification soon will begin and being number one in the World, will likely come with high expectations from fans and the audience. Having expectations from others can often put pressure on any athletes. Do you feel under pressure that there might be now a certain level of expectations from you when competing?
Polling: “I don’t feel any pressure at this moment. When I won Paris and Dusseldorf last year it was a little bit strange to see that people are recognising me and I needed to get used to that. Also I needed to get used to the fact that I won the tournaments. When I was junior I already won a lot, so winning was not new for me. But that was on junior level. Now I had won a Grand Slam and Grand Prix and I threw Lucie Decosse. For me it was clear that Decosse wasn’t on her best in Paris, so I was very happy that I fought again against her in the semi final of the Masters again. That was the second time I won from her and for me that was the confirmation that it wasn’t just a lucky shot in Paris.”
So, European Gold, World Bronze and five World Tour gold medals in the collection. Kim threw herself in the media attention and now she has her own website too; which is available in English as well as in Dutch. Of course social websites such as Twitter and Facebook are also there for fans to follow her. Do you like social media? Do you often talk to your fans? “Social media is the way to connect with fans and followers. I like Facebook and Twitter, but because Dutch is the language I use the most, it is easy for the fans from another countries to check the English version of my website.”
No doubt, Polling is going for Gold in the Brazilian capital. However, she is not thinking as far as we are. “Yes, I want to become Olympic Champion in Rio but before I can be an Olympic Champion I need to learn a lot more. But I think two and a half years is enough time to learn and to make myself ready for becoming Olympic Champion. On the other side, two and a half years is also still a long time and there can happen a lot in those two and a half years. I don't like to think too long term, I will take it year by year.”
The qualification is about to start in few months, how you feel about it? Rather nervous or excited?
“Neither feel excited or nervous. This will be the first Olympic qualification I will be doing, so that’s something I’m excited about. It’s something that I keep telling myself, that a lot of people want to fight at this level and for me it just feels normal that I’m fighting on this level. But still is very special that I’m capable of fighting this level, so I’m just reminding myself that’s it’s not normal to win 6 tournaments and be the number one of the World Ranking. It’s special and I need to be proud of it and not seeing it as just “normal” she explains.
So how does it feel to be the World number 1 in your weight category? “Feels great. I love to be number one, so I hope I will stay at this spot. But to be the number one of the World Ranking doesn’t mean you’re also World Champion. When I’m World Champion I can say that I’m really the best of the World.” said the winner of Paris.
Kim also tells us her top three wishes: “My wishes would be that I have an injury free year this year, I keep making progress, and of course become World Champion.”
Starting judo: I started Judo when I was 14 years old because my sister convinced me to try it. Before that I had done athletics and football. I wanted something different and I thought it would be fun for travelling, pushing my limits and meeting new people.
Representing Portugal: At the beginning I didn´t think of that too much, I just wanted to be the best I could and have fun. But then I realised how important and such a big honour it would be, so it was a goal to represent my country.
Judo is more than a sport: Judo is a way of life. The values of judo will stay with you no matter what, if you are a competitor or just someone who likes to practice judo but does not compete. The most important thing is the experience of being a judoka as that stays with you for all of your life.
Four senior European titles: I think the reason is the belief that I have in me and in all my hard work. Of course I love what I do, so I don´t see judo as a sacrifice, beside all efforts that competing in high level demands - if you are enjoying what you are doing and you put 100% into it, everything comes naturally. Since the beginning I've always worked hard and believed a lot in my capabilities, but the most important is that it was always very pleasant for me to go to training. And of course I've always fought for the first place, I've never put a limit, and I will always try to achieve a medal in all the competitions.
Judo in Portugal: Over the last few years judo has become a very respected sport in my country and it is getting more and more participants therefore more interest from the public. Now everybody knows judo, before people only knew judo as a martial art.
Judo's continued growth: The World Tour is getting really good because you have different types of competitions, from European Cup, Grand Prix, Grand Slam, to the different levels of athletes. The tournaments always have a great organisation and it is becoming more spectacular and attractive for those watching and also for the competitors. I really like the environment and the level of great competitions such as Grand Slam, Grand Prix and Masters. Now every athlete that starts in the World Judo Tour can start with the right level of competition and the ambition to go further. It´s a challenge for the youngest athletes. Also the updates and live stream help everybody to follow and be involved in the competition.
The future: For the future I hope I'll still be enjoying to do judo and be able to win more medals in World and European Championships and to be in the Olympic Games of Rio 2016, where I hope to be in a position to fight for a medal.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland Judo's world governing body defended one of its Russian officials on Monday after he was targeted by U.S. sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine. Arkady Rotenberg, a childhood friend and former judo sparring partner of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is development manager and an executive committee member of the International Judo Federation. The Russian billionaire was one of 20 people from Putin's inner circle hit by economic sanctions imposed last week by President Barack Obama following Russia's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine. Rotenberg is also on the executive committee of the SportAccord Convention, an annual conference of Olympic and sports industry leaders. The 2014 convention will be held next month in Antalya, Turkey. IJF President Marius Vizer said the U.S. action against Rotenberg "seems very bizarre to me," insisting it was up to Russia and Ukraine to solve their problems through "direct dialogue." "I do not see any connection with the application of sanctions by the United States against a private person who does not have anything to do with the process and the political decisions that occurred between the two states," Vizer said in a statement to The Associated Press. He said Rotenberg "honors us and remains rooted in our community" and will continue to carry out his judo roles. "His freedom of movement might be affected by these arbitrary measures and his activity might be more difficult in these conditions, but all the other IJF officials will compensate these flaws, thus showing their solidarity towards Mr. Rotenberg," Vizer said. Vizer, a Romanian-born Hungarian, also heads SportAccord, an umbrella body representing Olympic and non-Olympic sports federations. He is also president of the SportAccord Convention, which next meets in Antalya from April 6-11. Rotenberg is expected to attend the conference in Turkey. In a statement Monday, the convention said "according to our knowledge, there is no international framework" to apply U.S. sanctions against Rotenberg. "The SportAccord Convention team fully supports Mr. Rotenberg and we all hope that this unpleasant situation will be soon settled," the statement said. Arkady and his brother Boris Rotenberg, who was also hit by the U.S. sanctions, are reported to be worth $2.2 billion and $1.4 billion, respectively. They have held big state contracts, and Arkady Rotenberg's companies won billions in road contracts in Sochi, the host of the 2014 Winter Games. The Russian Forbes magazine estimated that Rotenberg received more than $28 billion in state contracts in the past five years.
David Matsumoto wasn’t interested in the sport of Judo when he first started at seven years old. But being the youngest of three boys, he was expected to follow in their footsteps when his time came. “In fact, I hated it for a number of years, until I got better,” the SF State psychology professor and former Olympic Judo coach said. “You’re basically getting your ass kicked in the beginning until you’re good?it’s not fun.” But Matsumoto stuck with it, and 43 years later, he became one of the four individuals in the USA to be promoted to seventh degree black belt in Judo by the age of 50. He said the sport recharges his mind to put all his energy into his life and work, and he was able to combine his love of Judo with his research. As an undergraduate student studying psychology at the University of Michigan in 1979, his interest in nonverbal expression developed. An expert on reading micro-expressions, gestures and nonverbal behavior, he has been studying it ever since. Later, he coached as a volunteer on the Olympic level and traveled around the world, all while still teaching at SF State. “I was one of the few coaches apart of a team that got a gold medal in 1999,” Matsumoto said. “To be there, see it happen and to hear the Star Spangled being played and the flag is raising (while) you’ve got your athlete on the podium…it is an amazing experience.” Matsumoto was then able to study the most extreme display of intense, real and raw emotion outside of the laboratory. As an official of the International Judo Federation, he was able to survey the 2004 Athens Olympics games up close. Matsumoto and his team examined physical reactions of players when they know they’ve immediately won or lost. He discovered that even though silver is a higher level of accomplishment, in terms of emotions those second-placers are “generally sadder and have more regret” than the athletes in third. “Bronze medalists win their last match, while silver medalists lose their last match and are left thinking of what could have been,” Matsumoto said. He said the need to understand these behaviors is vital to our everyday communications with one another in the real world. “If we don’t pay attention to it, we are probably missing a lot of the messages people are sending during our interactions,” he said .
Scott Madey, professor of psychology at Shippensburg University, did a similar study at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic games. Madey said it is seen over and over?people are not happy and do not appreciate what they have. “It is counterfactual thinking,” Madey said. “Silver (medalists) think of a better state they could have achieved, and bronze (medalists) imagine a world that was worse, one without a medal.” And he said if there is a better understanding of this, people will have an improved psychological state. “One with an appreciation of what we have. It goes across cultures; it is something we all engage in, despite our different lives.” Heather Reid, philosophy professor at Morningside College and co-author of “The Olympics and Philosophy” questions if the animal-like expressions that Matsumoto studies are truly instincts at all. “I wonder, how much these natural tendencies (are) biological and how much are cultural,” Reid said. “We see gestures repeated across time for winners, so we might be replicating the actions we have already witnessed.” Matsumoto looks ahead to studying whether expressions of dominance and triumph occur or not in both summer and winter Olympic games. “I believe it always occurs regardless of the sport, but we are looking forward to documenting that in research,” Matsumoto added. Although he said coaching a team on the Olympic level was very stressful, he knew ever since he was a Judo novice that he would one day be sharing his knowledge. He took over a Judo club and changed the name to what is today known as the East Bay Judo Institute. “Since I was young, my first Judo instructor always instilled in me one of the things we have to do as a student is give back,” Matsumoto said. “As a part of my Judo training I knew that I would also be helping others by teaching what I know.”

Everybody is already very well known with the situation of the London bronze medalist Charline van Snick. Apparently at the World Championships in Rio 2013 she failed on doping test and her points were taken from that Championships. What you maybe didn\'t know, Ivan Vorobev of Russia is in the same situation. If you look closely into the International Judo Federation World Ranking List and check the points of the Vorobev for Rio2013 you will see that there is 0 (zero) points. This makes lot of questions for the U81 fighter, why there is zero points and did he really failed on doping test, why was only the case of Charline van Snick public? Is there special list for which competitors reputation do we care and protect them? Why are some athletes exposed into the public, specially when they are Olympic medalists, however the both cases are not good for judo, but there should be same criteria for everybody.

Austria’s Peter Seisenbacher, one of the best judo practitioners, is under investigation for purportedly sexually assaulting four of his minor pupils that he coached back in the 2000s. On Wednesday, the Vienna state prosecution confirmed the reports about the Olympic gold medalist. They said that the investigation on Seisenbacher started last year when the four pupils filed sexual assault charges against their former coach. Seisenbacher, 54, became the first judoka to win consecutive Olympic gold medals. The first medal was in 1984 at the Los Angeles Olympics for the Men’s Middleweight (86 kg.) event, and the second one was in 1988 at the Seoul, South Korea Olympics, again for the Men’s Middleweight (86 kg.) event. Before the 1984 Olympics, Seisenbacher went to Japan to develop his judo skills, which provided the optimal conditions for his training. Training in a different country allowed Seisenbacher and the rest of the Austrian team to have world-class partners that they could train with. According to his coach, George Kerr, Seisenbacher returned from Japan “a different fighter.” His extensive training in Japan made him a better athlete. After winning his first Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles, Seisenbacher created a winning streak by being the world champion in 1985 and the Europe champion in Belgrade in 1986. From 2010 until 2012, Seisenbacher was the head coach of the Georgian national judo team. He continued to win European championship medals and world championship medals. From 2012 to 2013, Seisenbacher became the head coach of the Azerbaijan national judo team. Seisenbacher followed the footsteps of Coach Kerr, and has proved to be successful. Kerr is a Scottish judo expert who competed for the United Kingdom. He has four European championship medals under his name. If found guilty of the sexual harassment charges, Seisenbacher could spend up to 10 years in prison.
Two-time Olympic judo champion Peter Seisenbacher of Austria is under investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting four minor pupils as a coach in Vienna in the early 2000s. Vienna state prosecution on Wednesday confirmed Austrian media reports, saying the investigation started last year after the four women filed charges against their former coach. If charged and found guilty, the 54-year-old Seisenbacher could face a prison term of up to 10 years. Seisenbacher became the first judoka to win gold at two consecutive Olympics, in 1984 in Los Angeles and four years later in Seoul. Seisenbacher was head coach of the Georgia team when Lasha Shavdatuashvili won gold in the men's 66-kilogram division at the 2012 London Olympics
The incidents allegedly occurred during his time as a coach in the early 2000s. Vienna’s public prosecutor's office has been investigating the accusations since Autumn 2013. Seisenbacher, 54, allegedly abused at least four under-age girls. The victims approached the public prosecutor's office directly. The women, who are now adults, say that Seisenbacher abused them when he was working as a judo club coach in Vienna. One of the women was still at primary school at the time, and so would have been younger than 14. Seisenbacher, who won gold at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul in 1988, has not commented on the allegations. According to reports, the public prosecutor's office has almost finished its investigation, and is waiting for the final police report. If found guilty Seisenbacher could face up to ten years in prison.

Olympic judo bronze medallist Charline van Snick has won her appeal against a two-year doping ban before the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Van Snick, 24, tested positive for cocaine at the world championships in Rio de Janeiro in August 2013, after winning another bronze medal in the 48kg category. She vehemently denied taking the drug, claiming that she was the victim of sabotage, and the world sports' tribunal partially found in her favour. "The CAS has recognized the existence of an anti-doping rule violation, but has partially upheld the appeal of the athlete, considering that she was probably the victim of sabotage," CAS said in a statement. "Consequently, the CAS has maintained the annulment of the results obtained by Charline van Snick during the Judo World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 2013, but has annulled the two-year ban imposed by the FIJ (International Judo Federation) against the athlete." Van Snick tested positive for cocaine metabolites after her bronze medal win and the B sample confirmed the result. "The arbitral panel in charge of this matter has examined the arguments of the parties and has first noted that the presence of cocaine in the athlete's body was established, even in a very low quantity, and that it constituted a violation of the applicable anti-doping regulations," CAS continued. "Furthermore, it has concluded that the athlete was not a cocaine consumer, neither regularly, nor occasionally, and that the voluntary consumption of such substance during the judo World Championships was highly unlikely. "However, the arbitral panel considered that the existence of sabotage against the athlete was the most likely scenario, taking into account some troubling facts brought to the knowledge of the Panel during the procedure, in particular the existence of a complaint for harassment filed by the athlete against a member of her entourage ..." It added that a criminal investigation against an unnamed person was currently under way.
Van Snick tested positive for banned cocaine metabolites after winning a bronze medal in the under-48 kilogram class at the worlds in Rio de Janeiro last August. The International Judo Federation banned her for two years and disqualified her worlds results, but Van Snick appealed to CAS, saying she was the victim of sabotage. CAS agreed, noting Van Snick's complaint of harassment against a member of her entourage and, since the positive test, an ongoing investigation of a criminal complaint. CAS said Van Snick was not a cocaine user, and upheld her appeal because "the scenario of sabotage by a malicious third party was ... the most likely scenario." However, her disqualification at the worlds stood because there was a doping violation. Van Snick also won bronze at the London Olympics.
One of MMA’s biggest superstars, Ronda Rousey, boasts top-level judo as one of her strongest core skills. Yet in France, one of Europe’s lone holdouts standing against MMA, it’s judo helping to block the UFC from coming into the country.
“When you have the president of the judo federation (Federation Francaise de Judo) saying that MMA is not a good sport ? and this federation has 600,000 people participating in judo, which is huge for France ? you listen to them,” International Mixed Martial Arts Federation President Bertrand Amoussou told MMAjunkie. “So we come in after that and say, ‘No, it’s not a bad sport.’ We need to show them that we are making an effort and are constantly working on regulations and safety and things like that.”
If there’s a more perfect man to lead the charge to bring MMA to France than Amoussou, it’s certainly hard to imagine. The 48-year-old is a lifelong practitioner of martial arts who was born in Senegal but moved to France at just 4 years old and started training in judo. He represented France in the 1990 European Judo Championships and took home a bronze medal.
Amoussou, the older brother of onetime Bellator title challenger Karl Amoussou, eventually turned his attention to MMA and in 2004 picked up a knockout win under the PRIDE banner. He was named IMMAF president in August 2013.
Until now, France has declined to support MMA, not directly banning the sport but instead outlawing organized competitions. Amoussou believes the judo federation he once represented is a key reason the government remains opposed to the sport.
“The judo federation is very strong in France,” Amoussou said. “They are just afraid the MMA will become bigger than judo, so they are pushing for us not be recognized.
“We’ve been going through this process for 10 years now explaining and educating, and fortunately there have also been a lot of changes in the media. Three or four years ago, it was written in the media that MMA is a very brutal sport and things like that, but today they’re learning more about MMA and they are saying, ‘Come on, it’s not as brutal as we thought. We should recognize the sport. There are good people running the sport.
“Every time they change the government in France, they keep on saying the same thing, that things are changing, so now they need to make the move.”
Amoussou was in Las Vegas to oversee the IMMAF’s first-ever amateur world championships, which took place as part of the UFC’s International Fight Week activities. He’s since returned to France, where he lives, and is scheduled to meet with the government next week.
Amoussou is hopeful French officials will listen to the changing sentiment of the public and open the nation to hosting MMA events, which could eventually include a visit from the UFC.
“Obviously France is a little bit conservative, and we can understand that,” Amoussou said. “They’re concerned that they’ll put their son into MMA, and he’ll be hurt. I think they understand the professional part of sport, But they also need to understand that that will be just 1 percent of the people who practice the sport. We have to work for the other 99 percent, too.
“We need to talk to the government. I’m talking to them this month, July 18, and we need to see what comes out of it. Everything is ready. All the questions that they will ask me, I have a response for that, so I’m quite confident we can start to host events very soon. If you ask me when I think we can have a UFC in France, if I’m remaining very very positive like I am, I would say in one year ? maybe one to two years.”
France isn’t heavily represented at the top level of the sport. Francis Carmont and Nordine Taleb were both born in France but currently live and train in Canada. Still, Amoussou said there are approximately 15,000 people training MMA in the country.
The political roadblocks sound eerily similar to the situation in New York, the lone U.S. state that still doesn’t sanction the sport, where logic doesn’t necessarily dictate policy.
Amoussou hopes now is the time for that all to change.
“People in France are finally hearing the truth about MMA,” Amoussou said. “Five years ago, they might say it was a brutal sport and ask, ‘Why do you have this octagon? Why do you put those people in that type of situation and allow punches on the ground?’ But we have statistics and studies we can share with them to show all that we do in the sport for fighter safety. Once they really study it, it’s obvious they need to make the move.”
